How Did It All Start?
It started almost 10 years ago. When a bunch of friends just wanted to play hockey without having to carry around their heavy net to and from home every time they wanted to play outside.
Instead of carrying a net, we chalked our own on the school wall. Mother nature would wear it off and that's when the idea of painting all sorts of different Sportswalls started.
Fast forward to 2017. Get Active 'N Play is focused on every kid getting a chance to play and growing up physically literate. By painting Sportswalls on their schools, teaching physical litearcy skills through fun games and challenges. We want all kids to have the opportunity to play and be active for life!
Partnerships and projects
Get Active ‘N Play Leadership Program:
In 2012 at St.Henry Catholic School in Scarborough, the outside of the school walls have been painted with nets for hockey, tennis, baseball and volleyball. With the help of the Toronto Sports Council, 44 grade seven students became Sport Wall leaders. They learned about True Sport (who also provided financial support to the project) as well as Canadian Sport for Life fundamentals and different games and activities that can be played on the Sports Walls. The result is a more active student population and free outdoor facilities accessible to the community 24/7. A testimonial can be viewed here
In 2014 Get Active ‘N Play received $19,900 over one year from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. To foster youth participation in sport, recreation and Get Active ‘N Play Leadership program in York Region Schools.
The IGNITE program
The IGNITE program is a community partnership enabling individuals, or organizations and communities to create their own Pan Am/Parapan Am Games initiative and/or increase awareness
of existing initiatives by being associated with the TORONTO 2015 Games.
We hosted ‘Pan Am Sports Days’ leading up to the games. Using Sportswalls established schools, we invited local communities to play various sports that were being played at the Pan Am games.
